The new york mandated reporting working group is A Collaborative developing policy
solutions to end the harms of mandated reporting in new york state.

THE PROBLEM

Mandated reporting laws require professionals to report suspected child abuse and neglect, but expansion of requirements has not led to better outcomes for children. Vague standards and fear of penalties lead to overreporting, particularly of poverty-related neglect, causing unnecessary investigations that can harm children and their families.

our work

The NY MRWG uses historical and legal research, data, and community engagement to develop policy solutions that limit harmful reporting and investigations. The group aims to advance legislative, oversight, and practice changes that prevent unnecessary system involvement and better support New York families and their communities.

who we are

The New York Mandated Reporting Working Group is a coalition of advocates, professionals, and impacted individuals working to reduce the harm caused by mandated reporting and the investigations it triggers. We seek legislative solutions and a new, trust-based approach that better supports families and strengthens their stability and well-being.
